Indian Clubs
Indian Clubs

The club is the oldest tool in history, present through myth and legend and in the hands of heroes since the dawn of mankind.

Early Vedic art depicts the Gods with Clubs in their hands, and the legend flows that the club was given to man to make man more like the Gods.

Many of the old time strong men and physical culture icons utilized the Indian Club as a mainstay of their training regimens.
While the moniker “Indian Club” has been a common term used to describe the smaller British style clubs, the clubs in India are actually large in general, and often referred to as “Jori”
There are also club swinging traditions present in many other cultures
For instance, the Persian “Meel”
the Russian “Bulova”
No matter what you call the implement, a club is a club.
The British Colonial forces, having seen the Indian constabulatory training with the clubs, and noting the fine physical development of the men, incorporated the use of the clubs, and brought them from India as their Empire spread through the world, there has been a rich tradition of club turning interwoven in physical culture ever since.
The Swedish and German Gymnastic traditions were also instrumental in furthering the spread of club turning as a means of building and maintaining fine physical health and wellness. In the Swedish Movement Cures of the early 19th and 20th centuries the lighter clubs were pivotal points in the protocols used to develop mobility and stability in the joints and promote grace and power in their movements. The German traditions utilized more of the heavier clubs, and promoted a more physically demanding, yet still rewarding method of utilizing the club as a tool to develop strength and fluid, powerful movement.
James has studied many methods, and is a Certified Indian Club Specialist in the Thomas System of club turning. Having been coached personally by Dr Ed Thomas, and having attended the first (and only Certification taught personally by Dr Thomas), James brings a unique and well versed perspective to the art and science of club swinging.
He can develop and structure a program that will suit your or your organizations needs and goals and can provide instruction to up to 50 people at once. (James can actually teach as many people as are willing to learn, using the methods of the oldtime physical culture instructors and Military model of training, but 50 is a reasonable limit for a room )
James is also a distributor of the MotionRX clubs, a high quality line of Talc re-inforced Polymer Clubs that are made in the USA. The clubs manufactured by MotionRX are of superior quality, they have excellent balance and feel, consistent dimensions, and are very durable (I have lost grip on a pair and watched them go under the wheels of a city bus, and come out the other side with only a few nicks, yet still serviceable, those clubs are still in daily use)

- and any other athlete or individual that wants full, unimpeded use of their arms through their full range of motion.

- range of motion at the shoulder, elbow, wrist and hands
- coordination of the arms, hands and eyes
- proprioceptive enhancement (move better, feel better, live better longer with less effort)
- endurance

The circular motions and the myriad variety that can be brought to the use of the clubs leaves one person, with 2 light clubs, with a lifetime of exercises that can be constantly varied.
The use of 2 clubs, with one side of the body performing a motion that differs from the other leads to greater neuro-plastic development. You can actually become smarter and gain greater cognitive abilities, stave off the effects of old age and genetics.
In short if you want to be
- Stronger,
- Faster,
- Smarter,
- More Coordinated,
- More Graceful,
- More Powerful,
and do all of this with a couple of simple tools that require less than 20 minutes of practice a day, then the Indian Club may be just what you are looking for
Call or email James today to schedule a consultation, or to have James come and demonstrate the use of the clubs. He can be brought in to speak about the history and use of the clubs, and to do “Lunch and Learn” sessions for your school, workplace, or organization.
